Launched in September 2016, TikTok has quickly gained a massive following with approximately 30 million daily users. What originally started as an app for lip syncing popular songs and creating viral dances has turned into something so much bigger. Now TikTok is a create place for businesses to promote their services and products due to the app’s ad spaces, collaborations with popular creators, and ever-growing trends. Thanks to this app, a lot of smaller businesses have received clicks to their site and sold products due to customer reviews on the popular app. A great promotion place for companies of all sizes.

Company branding

When people visit your profile, you want to ensure that it is on brand. Match your theme and style to your website so you are instantly recognisable. First up, is your profile picture. A great idea for this is to use your company logo. This may need some slight redesigning as the TikTok profile picture, much like many other social media platforms is a circle. Therefore, if your website logo is rectangular, this should be edited to fit the shape so your who logo or name is on show.

Next up, is your bio. For this, you may have a company slogan. However, if you don’t we recommend you write a brief sentence or two about your company – the services or products that they offer – within about 80 characters in order to keep it short and sweet. Underneath your bio, there is also a space where you can add a link. For this, you could link your home page as the landing page. There is also another space where you can link your other social medias profiles – which will increase your engagement across all platforms.

Create the correct content

While still maintaining your company branding, you want to ensure that the content that you create is interesting and fun in order to maintain users’ attention, receive more likes and comments, and gain more of a following. A great way to do this is to ensure that your videos are not solely ads or in an ad format.  Make videos trying out your products or showing the services that you offer – possibly working with popular content creators who already have a following to promote your brand. For example, if you’re a makeup company, send PR packages to content creators who will review your products in videos.

Another top tip for creating videos is to make them enticing. Add TikTok’s text feature and ensure that it is bright, colourful, and has a good tagline that will draw in users to continue watching your video. Another popular feature is the text-to-speech, which reads out your text in an AI voice, immediately grabbing user;s attention due to its popularity.

Keep up with current trends

An easy way to get your videos onto people’s ‘For You Page’ is to follow what is trending. On the sound selection, there is a section that features the most popular songs. It is a great idea to keep up with these as user’s feeds can show videos with a certain sound due to them watching and liking other’s videos with that sound or using it themselves.

If you want to use filters on your videos, like Ryan Air and Duolingo – two of the most followed companies on TikTok – this is another way to reach user’s feeds as, much like the sounds, videos with their favourite or most watched filters will continue to pop up as they scroll.

Finally, it is also a good idea to keep up with popular hashtags. We recommend you create your own tags, so users can reach you easily, as well as adding related hashtags to your business. It is also suggested to include well-used hashtags based on the current trend you are participating in or what is trending on the FYP.

4 Tools You NEED as a Digital Marketer [2022]

As a digital marketer, your primary role is to define, design, build and implement digital campaigns across online and social media platforms. Creating and tracking campaigns require essential digital tools such as content creation software, design tools and analytic trackers.

This guide will outline the vital tools you need to use, as well as our top recommendations for the best software out there to level up your marketing – let’s begin!


1. Canva

Canva is an Australian graphic design platform, used to create social media graphics, presentations, posters, documents and other visual content. It also allows users to upload templates for other marketers to use.

This is one of my favourite design tools, as it is user-friendly and produces professional content without the cost of a top-end graphic designer. This is great for businesses with a small budget, who prefer to do in-house design rather than out-sourcing.

Canva allows you to collaborate with your team on the same platform, giving you the option to share directly with team members or set permissions on who can edit the content.

The tool is free to use with some features being restricted to a premium plan. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Removing the background of images
  • Resizing
  • Full access to photos, elements and fonts

Canva Pro is £99.99 a year and is limited to one person. Canva for Teams is £129.90 a year 2+ people.

2. Mailchimp

If you’re one of the 8/10 marketers who use email marketing, Mailchimp is for you!

Mailchimp is a marketing automation platform which is designed for businesses using email to reach their target audience. It’s an all-in-one tool, allowing you to manage mailing lists and create email templates. Being a web-based application means you don’t need to download and install any software to your devices, and instead can use it on any web browser.

If you’re not clued up on everything coding, Mailchimp offers a range of readymade templates to use in your email campaigns. You can change colours, fonts and structure without needing to know HTML, CSS, or JavaScript. This is the perfect fix if your company is without an in-house web designer.

Mailchimp is free to use, with certain features being restricted to those who pay for the premium plan.

3. Yoast

If you’re familiar with WordPress, you will be familiar with Yoast.

Yoast is an SEO plugin, designed to help businesses optimize their websites for search engines. The plugin makes it easy to write titles and description tags inside of website pages. It also shows you a ‘Snippet Preview’ of how the page will look on Google’s search results page.

SEO is all about keyword research and Yoast allows you to set a ‘focus keyphrase’ to analyse the web content on a page. It determines how your content scores on different factors. For example, the length of text, using internal links etc. It then organises these scores using the traffic light system, with helpful tips to improve your rankings.  

Yoast is free to use with certain features being locked for Yoast SEO Premium members at £99 a year.

4. HubSpot

HubSpot has several marketing tools at hand, with everything you need in one place.

HubSpot offers a full stack of software, including a CRM, Marketing Hub, Sales Hub and a Service Hub. Coined as an ‘all-in-one marketing software’, it provides tools that can help your company with blogging, SEO, social media, email, landing pages and web analytics.

The ‘holy grail’ of inbound marketing, HubSpot’s tools can help you to grow your traffic, convert leads and prove ROI for your inbound marketing campaigns. With everything in one place, it couldn’t be more ideal for a digital marketer.

HubSpot offers a ‘free tools’ package, as well as other premium packages to unlock more features – starting at £38/month.

Tips to Boost your Organic Digital Marketing: TikTok

Looking for a new area to branch out in digital marketing? TikTok is currently the Number 1 social media app on the planet. Boasting a whopping 1.4 billion users worldwide, it is currently expected to read 1.8 billion by the end of 2022. Originally launched as a simple short form video app, it gained $4.6 billion in revenue in 2021. That’s a 142% increase year-on-year. With all this growth it’s no wonder that TikTok is currently the place to be for digital marketing.

But how exactly can this app and its massive user base be best utilised organically? Is it guaranteed that your brand will “blow up” on TikTok? There’s no plan for virality unfortunately, but let’s take a look at some tips to get your TikTok marketing strategy up and running.

1. Create your TikTok channel and make some content

Where better to start that getting yourself on the platform itself. Setting up a channel is as easy as with any other social media platform, and you can begin creating content right away. Kit out your profile with a branded profile photo and some biography information. If users click through to your profile, they want to know who you are at a single glance, so make it easy for them.

Content can be created easily, quickly, and with basically no budget – very accessible for start-ups or newer brands. Now all you’ve got to do is make some videos! Start by finding a trending sound, a TikTok “challenge,” or a viral hashtag to get your content out there. Take advantage of the apps in-built editing equipment to make your video look as good as it can be. Don’t forget an engaging caption and some more hashtags will really help to boost that video.

TikTok favours authentic, relatable, organic content, so posting flashy brand videos here won’t do any favours. Set some realistic posting goals to begin with as well. 2-3 videos a week should be great to start with. Keep tabs on what content does well out of those posted in that week and perhaps build on those specific topics. Make sure to create content to truly resonate with your target audience and encourage engagement. Remember, younger people especially want to feel like they’re speaking to a person rather than a brand.

2. Marketing yourself to your audience

Speaking of engagement, zoning in on a target audience for your content can be incredibly beneficial in the long run. While it’s important not to pigeonhole yourself too early on, a key audience will eventually evolve, and you’ll find it much easier to market directly toward them. This is where a bit of prior research could really help – what kind of content are your target audience after? Do they enjoy silly lip synchs? Transition videos? Spending some time on the app and getting to know the persona of your audience can help your content grow much faster.

Pro-Tip: Utilise the video comment function. If a supporter asks a question in your comments, reply with a bespoke video filmed just for them. It’s a very personable approach that may end up creating a loyal follower to your brand but will also show new users how engaged you are with your audience. This is a very useful tool to connect with both warm and cold audiences and encourage people to interact with your comment section more. Just remember than even in video format, adhering to customer service best practices is key!

TikTok is also a great place to be to attract younger audience. This is something that could currently prove to be difficult on other social media platforms. According to its demographics, 25% of its users (the largest percentage) are between 10-19. Whilst insights say this age bracket is the least likely to participate in brand loyalty, it does state that this demographic is likely to be more loyal to any brands they do choose to follow. Definitely something to consider when deciding where to target your content.

While it may seem daunting potentially marketing to such a young age bracket, this is also a demographic that responds the best to TikTok’s primary method of marketing – influencers.

3. Utilising influencer marketing on TikTok

Influencer online states that 91% of 16-24 year olds credited influencer advertisements on social media as their reason for purchasing a product. This is a huge number of conversions on such a core market. If you’re looking to organically grow your brand on TikTok then you NEED to be looking into influencers as soon as possible.

Collaborating with an influencer is essentially collaborating with a TikTok expert. As someone who uses the app daily, or as a full-time profession, they will know the best way to market your brand. Promoting your brand to a large, highly engaged following will see that your marketing is taken care of. This will also help to promote brand advocacy and loyalty to their mass of followers; hearing from someone they trust that this brand is good will ultimately lead them right to you.

TikTok has established its own Creator Marketplace that helps to link up brands and creators. Some smaller creators may do some marketing for free or in exchange of products but expect to have some budget ready for this stage. Influencing is its own career now! Again, make sure to do some research beforehand and see which influencers best suit the tone and goals of your brand – having a fashion influencer promoting tech isn’t exactly going to work out well. It’s all about what fits the best.

Some brands even get lucky and have influencers advocating for them before they’ve even reached out. While this is some great free marketing, don’t bank on it. Do your research, reach out to relevant users, and engage their audience – you can’t plan for virality!

Using the Yoast plugin’s readability function can help with ensuring your content is of the highest quality and what you may need to improve it. If text is too long and confusing then it may need simplifying, think to yourself can I say this in less words?

You need to ensure all links within your content are up-to-date and working because if someone is sent off your site to the wrong place, they might not find your content trustworthy or could not return. Using website monitoring tools such as SilkTide and Monsido run regular scans of your site’s content and provide reports on spelling mistakes, grammar issues and broken links.

Accessibility within your Web Content

When posting anything to your website you need to take everyone into consideration. As a result of this you provide yourself the biggest possible user base. When including links into your content make sure it is within the text and makes sense instead of just having a ‘click here’ link, as these can cause an issue for those using screen readers on your site. Similarly, if an image has been used Alt-text should be applied to it. Alt-text allows for an image to be described to someone who is using a screen reader on your site, so this will allow them to engage with your content the way you intended.

Using Yoast plugin will help you track how optimised your content is.

You’ve posted your engaging, optimised and accessible now what? The next stage is to track the success of your web content. The most popular tool used by digital marketers is Google Analytics, this is because Google is the most used search engine, this is what you want to be ranked on.

Google Analytics provides a wide variety of data such as:

  • Unique Page View
  • Time on Page
  • Bounce Rate
  • Sessions

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) will have been agreed in a marketing plan and these will provide the framework for what you are tracking. An example of a KPI for web content could be: Increase our average page views each month by 20%, this can be achieved with SEO optimising the posts and increasing the rankings.

Digital tools for content creation:

Content creation spans across text posts, such as status updates and blogs, graphic and infographic content, animated graphic video content, filmed video content, pdf content, email content – essentially any kind of visual that you see online.

Canva

Canva is an online digital tool for making graphics and videos. They have both a free and paid plan available. Canva has a huge library of templates, icons, animations, royalty-free images and music that you can use for your business. It’s a must-have for any digital marketer looking to create infographics, videos, or dynamic presentations with a bit of extra eye-catching content.

Herefish and MailChimp

Herefish and MailChimp are both digital tools for creating templates for email marketing newsletters. They both have a library of pre-existing templates, and the option to create your own from scratch, adding in your company branding.

Adobe Creative Cloud

Adobe Creative Cloud is a library of content creation programmes. There are many different ones available, but here were we’ll discuss;

Photoshop

Photoshop is used to create original images, or edit existing images and photos. You can remove distracting objects from a photo, adjust the colours of an image, or create GIF content. Content created in Photoshop has the option to be high resolution, so it is a great programme for logo and asset creation.

Premiere Pro

Premiere Pro is a video editing software. You can cut and move around clips, adjust the speed, audio and colour levels, and layer videos, music and images on top of one another. Premiere can export GIFs, .mov, .mp4, .mp3 and more.

Audition

Audition is an audio editing software. You can import your video content and remove any background noise, amplify the voice of someone speaking, add ambient background noise, and more. Audition is great for anyone looking to clean up audio if you’ve filmed content without a mic – or to polish and perfect audio that already used a mic.

Digital tools for content scheduling:

Content scheduling allows you to plan a date and time for a post on a social media channel. By creating and scheduling content in advance, you can work on other tasks and know that every post is going out as planned.

Sprout Social

With Sprout Social, you can connect multiple accounts to schedule content. You’re given a calendar, which shows all your upcoming posts. You can set posts to go out on specific platforms, at specific dates and times. For certain channels, you can set thumbnail images too. Currently, you can schedule images and videos, but not documents or Instagram carousels.

Sending email content:

Every email that you receive from a clothing brand, service, or company is classed as email content (or email marketing). This type of content plays an important role in lead generation and can also be used as a method of linking back to your website and social media.

Herefish and MailChimp

In Herefish and Mailchimp, you can create lists of contacts to receive your content, and put together tailored automations to reach these lists. By using these programmes, bulk email campaigns are sent out without having to manually type out each individual address. If you’ve got content you want to go out to people in a specific postcode, make a list for your contacts in… Derby for example, set up the automation, and hit send! Your contacts will then receive it instantly.

Digital tools for web metrics, analysis and reporting:

Web metrics are classed as a specialist area, and will be important in your apprenticeship when showing that you can monitor your social media accounts, pull through data, and interpret it to form short and long term marketing plans.

Instagram Insights

This digital tool is only available through the mobile app. Instagram Insights will give you the ability to see your audience demographics, such as age and location.  You can also view metrics for feed posts and story posts, narrowing these down to engagement, reach, shares, and profile visits.

One feature that sets Instagram Insights apart is the ability to see which days, and time of day your audience is most active. With this, you can develop a content scheduling plan tailored to your business and audience, posting when they are most active and likely to see it.

Sprout Social

Sprout Social is a one-stop location for all your social platform metrics. You can compare content across channels or view content from one specific platform. Sprout has a Reports feature, where data is automatically pulled through and formed into charts and graphs. This saves you time inputting data to create your own infographics for presentations. Sprout also automatically compares stats from month-on-month, giving you a percentage for each metric so that you can see where stats have reduced or increased.

Not only does it allow you to innovate with your brand, but also to grow with your audience. When you dive deep into the depths of what content creation can entail in your apprenticeship, you’ll find a vastness of creativity, ideas and excitement. And with an ever-growing range of outlets for your creations and the development of more ways to reach your audience, it is clear to see why content creation can be seen as one of the most exciting areas of digital marketing.

But with such remarkable opportunity for experimentation, and so much availability for new and exciting ideas, not only can creating content for your brand feel somewhat overwhelming, but it also means there’s huge potential to miss the mark when it comes to resonating with your audience. So, I’ve rounded up my top tips to ensure that the content you create in your digital marketing apprenticeship remains fresh and your results remain strong.

Know Your Audience

It’s the oldest trick in the book – and it’s easy to see why. When you begin to think about the type of content you want to create for your brand, the audience you’re targeting should be at the top of your list for considerations. Not only does this mean understanding what themes of content they’ll find relatable, but also where they’re going to be found.

For example, considering which channels they’re more likely to interact with (and more specifically which channels they interact with whilst in a conversion mindset) Also, it’s important to consider which types of content they’re more likely to engage with. For instance, do they prefer feed posts or do they show more engagement in stories? Creating customer personas are a great way to begin to understand this. And when you begin gaining data on content that performs well, you’ll be able to refine your understanding on what is considered engaging for your audience.

Use Your Voice

It’s certainly not an easy job, but it’s a worthwhile one. Creating a voice for your brand and company which goes beyond getting the client or customer to convert is one of the most effective ways to make sure content delivers results. By creating a tone of voice for your brand which is used across owned media, your audience begin to engage with your brand on a personal level. Rather than just being a company which provides a needed service, you’re now an organisation which tells a story and is relatable to the human instinct of your customer or client.

An effective way of doing this can either be by showing the behind-the-scenes workings of your business, creating content which inspires customer feedback and communication, or simply by using humour to engage with your audience.

Consistency Is Key

Once you’ve established a clear tone of voice and understand your audience, consistency within your content is a great way to keep your brand on your audience’s radar. This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to recycle the same best-performing video over-and-over on every channel, or that you have to plaster your logo onto every piece of content you create, it simply means maintaining the brand’s online reputation.

This can be anything from writing copy which matches the brands tone of voice, subtly using brand colours or fonts within graphic design work, or even having a consistent schedule to post content. Consistency creates yet another layer of familiarity of your brand for your audience and is an effective method to keep customer interest retained.

PPE – no, not that kind… All jokes aside, having a content creation process which includes thorough planning will ensure that content is not only created, but executed to a level which shows off the full potential of your brand. By having a clear understanding of hero-trends, micro-trends and keywords that you want to target, you’ll ensure your content remains relevant and insightful for your audience.

Keyword research tools, Google Trends and even having a clear understanding of your audience’s current interests, are great methods to ensure you’re on the ball with planning and preparing relevant and engaging content.
