Building Services Engineering Technician Apprenticeship

Building services engineers typically work for clients, consultancies, contractors or suppliers and manufacturers in different phases of building services projects. Technicians will support each organisation type in different

As a technician, you will work on a variety of buildings across the built environment. This includes residential, schools, healthcare facilities and hospitals, retail outlets, offices, restaurants, cinemas, museums etc. Also, infrastructure projects such as transport hubs, stations, ports, airports, power plants, water, and waste facilities.

Your purpose will be to bring life to and connect the buildings we live and work in and ensure they meet the needs of those they need to accommodate. In addition to providing comfort, safety, and efficiency in compliance with environmental safety.

You will assist in the delivery of building services which can be mechanical (heating, ventilation, and cooling), electrical (power, lighting etc), and public health (water services and drainage).

Responsibilities and requirements of the role:

  • Consider the safety and security for both people and equipment throughout buildings
  • Review the efficiency and sustainability of a project e.g. energy usage, water supply and management and communication networks which aid integrated systems and buildings.
  • Examine the comfort and control of a project like heating, ventilation, lighting, acoustics etc.
  • Apply engineering principles and techniques in the preparation, production and presentation of diagrams and documentation related to the engineering solutions
  • Use a range of tools and techniques, including analysis software and digital data modelling systems to assess and secure management of the engineering information.
  • Contribute to planning, designing, programming, management and delivery of engineering activities whilst adhering to timescales and budgets.
  • Assist in site inspections or surveys and report progress against project plans or technical aspects of the design.
  • Take responsibility of planning and organising their own work and contribute to the management of projects using business processes, procedures and methods of working.
  • Ability to use their own judgement when undertaking the occupational duties and applying technical knowledge, skills and behaviours in a range of contexts and environments.


Apprentices must have level 2 English and Maths to complete the End-Point Assessments. Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the End-Point Assessment. For those with an education, health and care plan or a legacy statement, the apprenticeship’s English and maths minimum requirement is Entry Level 3. A British Sign Language (BSL) qualification is an alternative to the English qualification for those whose primary language is BSL.

Other Mandatory Qualifications:

All apprentices will be required to achieve as a minimum, one of these mandatory qualifications. These qualifications have been approved by one of the professional engineering institutions as meeting the learning outcomes for Engineering Technician (EngTech). Other qualifications may be added at a later date, but must achieve approval from one of the professional engineering institutions licenced by the Engineering Council and meet the Institute’s criteria for inclusion.

  • Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Building Services Engineering. Level: 3. Ofqual regulated.
  • Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Building Services Engineering. Level: 3. Ofqual regulated.
  • EAL Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification. Level: 3. Ofqual regulated.
  • Pearson BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Technical Knowledge). Level: 3. Ofqual regulated.
  • City and Guilds Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification. Level: 3. Ofqual regulated.

The Level 2 Leisure team member apprenticeship allows you to work along side your colleagues to perform a range of operational duties such as, assisting with the opening and closing of the facility, undertaking routine maintenance of equipment, and maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the environment. Additionally ensuring programmed activities and services are available for customers. They will be acting as a Lifeguard, Swimming Teacher, Gym Instructor and Group Activity Leader. The level 2 leisure team member apprenticeship creates an excellent opportunity to head into a new career path. Once the Leisure Team Member has completed the apprenticeship, they will be eligible to become a Recreation Assistant Practitioner Member of the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA).

Level 2 Leisure Team Member Competencies

As a part of your role, you will be carrying out duties that will show a number of competencies. Some of these examples are:

  • Communication (written & verbal) e.g., Information on products, and accident reporting procedures.
  • Customer Service e.g., training customers on equipment and answering any enquiries about products.
  • Use IT to perform front of house duties, social media, and digital channels.
  • Complying with legal requirements to ensure safety and security. (Equality Act, Data Protection etc)
  • Perform duties of a Lifeguard such as working as team to provide supervision of swimmers and prevent accidents.
  • Perform duties of a swimming teacher such as develop water confidence, core aquatic skills etc.
  • Perform duties of a gym instructor such as conducting, gym inductions and client consultations.

There are five key areas of work all leisure team members will cover; leisure and fitness operations, lifeguard duties, swimming teaching duties, gym instruction and leading group activities, these competencies will help prepare for the end-point assessment.

What will I learn?

Along with gaining real world experiencing completing the duties listed above. Here are a few examples of what you will know by the end of the apprenticeship:

  • The businesses organisational structure, its vision, values, missions and goals.
  • How your own area of work and that of colleagues contributes to achieving business targets.
  • The Sports and Leisure activities, products and services offered by the leisure facility, and how to match them to different types of customers’ needs.
  • Learn how to assemble, dismantle and store different types of equipment both simple and complex ranging from badminton nets to trampolines and powered equipment.
  • How technology is used in the industry e.g. front of house systems, IT systems, cash handling procedures, social media, digital channels.
  • Learn how exercise plays a role in improving public health and the impact of a sedentary lifestyle on physical and mental wellbeing.
  • How to perform lifeguard, swimming teacher and gym instructor duties.

The Qualifications

So, you are probably thinking, but what would I get out of this apprenticeship? Here are number of qualifications you will gain after the apprenticeship has been completed.

  • A IQL Level 2 Award in Pool Lifeguarding.
  • One of the following: A Swim England Level 2 in Teaching Swimming or A STA level 2 Certificate in Teaching Swimming.
  • A Level 2 Certificate in Fitness or Gym Instruction awarded by; Focus Awards, Active IQ, Innovate Awarding, NCFE, VCTC or YMCA Awards
  • A Level 3 Certificate in First Aid (to be taken either as a stand-alone qualification or as a separate part of the IQL Level 2 Award in Pool Lifeguarding).

Monday – Friday between 8:00 – 5:00pm

You will be required to be employed for 40 hours a week for a duration of 36 months. This does not include your End Of Point Assessment (EPA) period.

Jobs and entry criteria for Level 7 Archaeological Specialist Degree

This multi-faceted degree apprenticeship gives you all the tools to succeed in a lucrative career. You will lead archaeological research and investigations while working in all weathers and environments both outside and in an office. Moreover, through interacting with colleagues, external stakeholders and members of the public, this role contains tonnes of transferable skills. With the level 7 Archaeological Specialist degree, you could become anything from an Aerial Investigator to an Archaeological Investigator.

You think there is a catch? There’s not! Employers are becoming increasingly more aware of the importance of accessibility, most only requiring 5 GCSEs including Maths, English and Science. Although some employers prefer A Levels or BTECs or even undergraduate study, it is ultimately down to the employer to decide whether you are a fit for the company regardless of background. Key responsibilities of a Archaeological Specialist Apprentice

One of the key duties required from an Archaeological Specialist Apprentice is planning, leading and implementing research and investigation tasks. This will involve data handling, including surveys, excavation analysis, post excavation analysis and scientific analysis of archaeological materials and data. The Archaeological Specialist will also be responsible for communicating the results both internally and externally.

Level 7 Archaeological Specialist Core Duties

There are 15 core duties which must be met during the course of the apprenticeship. These give apprentices the opportunity to get a deep understanding of their chosen profession. Not only that, but apprentices will gain key skills that they can continue to use for career development.

  • Archaeological research and investigations
  • Identification of archaeological materials or data in a specialist area
  • Provide specialist advice to internal and external stakeholders, developing problem solving skills
  • Solve problems through using theoretical knowledge and academic research
  • Apply practical skills to an archaeological area or apply technical knowledge
  • Be able to collect and record archaeological data including electronic and spatial data
  • Analyse and evaluate the importance of archaeological materials
  • Be able to confidently store and prepare archaeological materials.
  • Plan and produce reports and publications
  • Communicate and share results of investigations with both specialist and non-specialists.
  • Be compliant and be responsible for health and safety
  • Be able to train others with archaeological research
  • Maintain compliance with legislation and codes of practice
  • Participate in specialist networks and groups to contribute to Historic body of knowledge and practice.

There are further knowledge requirements to consider while meeting the above duties. These are important in order to develop soft skills for continuous professional development.

Archaeological Specialist degree vendor exams

Apprentices that haven’t already achieved level 2 Maths and English will need to complete these prior to the EPA (End point assessment).

The key qualification achieved from this apprenticeship is an MA or MSc degree in Archaeology or Archaeological Science subject as well as professional recognition from the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists.
