Applicants should have completed level 1 English and Maths. Those who do not meet this requirement will need to achieve this as well as take a level 2 English and Maths test before completing the end point assessment.


The apprenticeship will take 14-18 months to complete.

Professional recognition: On successful completion of the Standard, all Apprentices will be automatically given CIMSPA (Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity) at Affiliate Member level.

After your apprenticeship

Once you have successfully completed your Community Activator Coach apprenticeship, there are plenty of opportunities available to progress in your careers. You will be able to progress into management or leadership roles in your sector. You will have the opportunity to use your knowledge and skills gained through your level 2 apprenticeship to take on new responsibilities and continue work in the community.

Key responsibilities of a Prosthetist and orthotist Apprentice

A Prosthetist and orthotist is a registered clinician. This unique occupation provides the opportunity to practice in two areas of healthcare. Most will specialise in Prosthetics or Orthotics; a small number continue in both. As a Prosthetists you will provide gait analysis and engineering solutions to patients with limb(s) loss. They are trained in mechanics and bio-mechanics. As well as material science with anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology. Prosthetists and orthotists will be able to design, provide and modify prostheses that replicate the structural or functional characteristics of a patient’s absent limb(s).

Jobs and entry criteria for the level 4 data analyst apprenticeship

This will include GCSEs, A levels, other relevant qualifications, relevant experience and/or an aptitude test.

Apprentices will be required to complete a Health and care professions council (HCPC) approved BSc (Hons) programme in prosthetics and orthoticsApprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this level prior to completing the end-point assessment. For those with an education, health and care plan or a legacy statement the apprenticeships English and maths minimum requirement is Entry Level 3.

Day to Day Responsibilities

  • Firstly you will provide Prosthetist and orthotist care to patients. Most commonly you will be in a hospital environment. You will also work closely with medical staff, physio and occupational therapists
  • Secondly, you will analyse patient’s needs and involve them in the design and choice of their devise. For instance, taking measurements and/or using computer modelling to produce a design of the prostheses or orthoses suited to the patient
  • Support patients to maximise their potential over the time of treatment – which could be life long
  • Finally you will carry out clinical follow-up checks with a patient to see how they are managing with their device. Moreover you will be able to spot ill-fitting, sub-optimal functioning and take appropriate action.

Alongside the broad range of knowledge and skills requirements mentioned above, there are key responsibilities that apply for all Optical Assistants regardless of whether you work within a small practice, large practice or within the domiciliary environment.

An Optical Assistant is always required to interpret and understand a clinically issued prescription, its effects on the eye, and the customer’s vision. They need to be able to identify the appropriate spectacles to meet the customer’s needs and be able to explain the features and benefits of these, using non-technical and customer friendly language.

It is an Optical Assistant’s responsibility to ensure the maximum comfort of the spectacle frame for the customer, avoiding physical damage to the skin through ill-fitting or the wrong material choice.

Level 2 Optical Assistant Apprenticeship Competencies

As part of your apprenticeship and job role, you will need to evidence your knowledge, and skills throughout the programme and in the end-point assessment. Some examples of the areas of standard are:

  • Health and safety: Maintaining safe working practices and identifying risks or dangers to self, customers, or colleagues.
  • Materials of frames and lenses: Identifying, explaining, recommending suitable frame and lens materials based on customer needs and requirements.
  • Tools and equipment: Confidently and correctly using a wide range of optical tools and equipment.
  • Quality and governance: Working to the appropriate company quality standards and systems.
  • Screening checks: Clearly explaining screening checks, the reasons they are done and how the machinery works.
  • Customer interactions, dispensing, fitting and adjustment of spectacles: Building rapport and trust with the customer and identifying their communication preferences.

Additionally, you will also be required to demonstrate the following behaviours:

  • Professionalism
  • Self-development
  • Safety orientated
