Course overview and requirements
The Institute for Apprenticeships has set high standards for this apprenticeship, which covers important areas such as:
- Designing BEMS that meet clients’ needs and comply with regulations
- Installing BEMS hardware and software components
- Commissioning BEMS through testing and verification
- Maintaining BEMS through fault-finding and routine maintenance
- Upgrading BEMS by replacing components

During the apprenticeship, you will develop essential skills such as communication, problem-solving, and project management. You will also learn about crucial considerations such as health and safety regulations, environmental sustainability, and excellent customer service.
In order to qualify for the BEMS Controls Engineer apprenticeship, you’ll need a minimum of five GCSEs at grades A*-C, including Maths, English, and Science. You may also potentially need a relating Level 3 qualification in a field such as electrical or mechanical engineering.
The BEMS Controls Engineer apprenticeship normally takes between three to four years to finish, dependant on prior experience and qualifications. During the duration of your apprenticeship, you will work full-time for an employer and attend lessons with either a college or a training provider one day per week.
What happens on completion?
On completion of the apprenticeship, you’ll receive a nationally recognised qualification and be equipped to work as a BEMS Controls Engineer. Not to mention that you’ll have the opportunity advance to higher-level apprenticeships or qualifications.
