If you are looking to kickstart your career in the film and TV industry but don’t know how to get your foot in the door, the apprenticeship route may be perfect for you. Apprenticeships are a perfect way to lean on the job, gain experience for from established industry professionals, and earn a salary.

You would be exposed to top media companies get the chance to work with experienced camera operators who know the craft like no other. As an apprentice you would be able to work with hire companies who supply camera hires for Film, TV, Music Promos, Commercials, Documentaries, Virals and other productions. You would be able to be a part of the crucial production stage of films and TV broadcasts, in which cameras are hired and used in the first step of creating magic.

On top of the brilliant exposure to industry professionals, great CV experience and a level 3 qualification at the end, you will also receive funding of £11,000. All you need is level 2 GCSE maths and english and a passion for the industry!

Key responsibilities

Some of the core duties of this role include:

  • Resource planning and allocation your work
  • Equipment preparation to meet specification and deadline
  • Routine maintenance to ensure working order, cleanliness and appropriate accessories
  • Lens checking to ensure they are clean, blemish-free and are correctly to scale
  • Quality assessments and testing
  • Colleague and client liaison so they are up to date with progress, developments and component compatibility
  • Camera checks and technical support
  • Equipment booking in and out
  • Maintenance of accurate equipment lists and records
  • Return of equipment to suitable specification after use.

These duties will allow you to become a confident camera operator and enhance your knowledge of equipment and how the industry works with them.

How will this apprenticeship allow me to get ahead in my career?

On successful completion of this apprenticeship, apprentices will remain and progress within, the Film and TV Camera Hire/Loan Sector. Due to the experience gained you will be able to continue on with the company or find a new venture in the industry using the experience gained along the way. Apprentices need to be able to provide technical advice and technical support about the compatibility and use of equipment to professional camera crews who rely on the integrity and technical skills of the individual. You will report to senior technical managers but will need to be able to work alone to prepare packages; managing their own workload and resources to meet time-limited deadlines. You will need to identify and resolve issues with resource availability, compatibility and condition; replacing and substituting components that do not meet specific and varied technical standards. By carrying these daily tasks and proving yourself to seniors in the industry, you will undoubtedly be able to make a success of having a media career in film and TV.

  • Works with a high level of sustained concentration and attention to detail, producing accurate work which meets quality specifications within agreed deadlines.
  • Works as part of a team, offering and accepting support from colleagues so that work deadlines are met.
  • Applies an appreciation of the value of the equipment to their work, using appropriate handling and packaging techniques to maintain the safety and security of equipment.
  • Works safely to ensure a safe working environment for themselves and others in the workplace in line with health and safety requirements at all times.
  • Thinks creatively and logically to solve technical issues, identifying incompatibilities and alternatives that benefit and improve on given kit list specifications.
  • Maintains a key interest in the equipment and technology of the industry, identifying new and emerging innovations and developments.
