What is the difference with apprenticeship and degree in Nursing?
You might be wondering, what is the difference between pursuing the apprenticeship route compared to pursuing the degree route at university?
A Nursing Degree apprenticeship will allow you to train and become a Registered Nurse The difference is, through the apprenticeship route, you will have the opportunity to learn and develop your practical skills both at the same time. This also means that you will be able to earn as you learn whilst completing your course.
What happens after?
After you 4 year programme, you will receive a degree in Nursing and register with the NMC as a Band 5 Registered Nurse.
What is the NMC?
NMC is the Nursing and Midwifery Council who will provide the set of skills and foundations to all nurses, ensuring to uphold professional standards for all nurses, midwives and specialists.
What can I specialise in?
With this apprenticeship degree, you have the opportunity to specialise in adult, child learning disability or mental nursing.
Adult Nurse:
As an adult nurse, you professional values require you to:
- Promote the rights and choices: You will be an advocate for the rights, choices and wishes of adults, children and young people, with careful consideration to equality, diversity and needs of an aging population
- Adhere to legislation: You will need to apply current legislation to all service users, focusing on the protection of vulnerable individuals with complex needs.
- Provide leadership and be a team player: You will need to be able to provide leadership in managing adult nursing care and respond to diverse healthcare needs, liaising with specialist teams to address various circumstances.
Child Nurse
As an child nurse, you professional values require you to:
- Deliver Child and Family-Centered Care: You will need to deliver care that centers around the child and family and always keeping their rights and best interest in mind.
- Respecting Individuality: You will need to treat each child and young person as a unique individual, taking into consideration their specific needs and responding accordingly.
- Advocacy and Teamwork: You will need to stand up for the rights of all children to live independent lives, working together with young people and their families to plan and provide guidance and care during their illness.
Learning Disability Nurse

- Family and Carers Involvement: You will need to actively engage with families and carers in the care and support of individual with learn disabilities.

Mental Health Nurse
As a mental health nurse, you professional values require you to:
- Use mental health frameworks: You will need to build positive relationships, focused on social inclusion, human rights and recovery.
- Address the potential power imbalance: You will need to take into consideration that there may be an imbalance between professionals and those with mental health challenges.
- Promote mental health and wellbeing: You will need to promote mental health and well-being whilst supporting the individual of the challenges of inequalities and discrimination they may face because of their mental health.

What are the entry requirements to apply to be a registered nurse?
The entry criteria for this apprenticeship are:
- Numeracy and Literacy at Level 2 (GCSE Grade C/4 or above or a Functional skills
- Level 3 Qualifications (A Level, BTEC, NVQ3)
