Jobs and entry criteria for the Level 4 Junior VFX Artist

In terms of entry criteria, there are a few key requirements for this apprenticeship.  Firstly, You must obtain your level 2 English and Maths prior to taking the End-Point Assessment, if you have previously achieved this, then this is valid. Secondly, Having some relevant experience or qualifications in VFX or a related field would be desired. Thirdly, you must have a right to work in the UK.

The VFX industry can be highly competitive. Having a strong portfolio of work will help you stand out from the crowds. Strong communication skills are also beneficial when applying for this apprenticeship.

Key Roles and Responsibilities of a Level 4 Junior VFX Artist

The role of a Level 4 Junior VFX Artist is designed for individuals with a basic understanding of VFX and more importantly a desire to develop their skills. This apprenticeship typically lasts 18 months, where you have the opportunity to learn on-the-job as well as in the classroom. It is required for you to complete 20% off-the-job training whilst in your role.

Some of the duties of a junior VFX artist may include:

• Be able to manage your own workload with the VFX production team, generating the required work on time, to meet the brief of the supervisor/client.
• Attending dailies/review sessions in order to gain feedback on their work and respond appropriately to that feedback.
• Working within the particular workflow pipeline/toolset depending on the company that they are working for.
• Perform effectively in collaboration with clients, colleagues, partners and suppliers in the VFX industry to ensure that the CG elements are seamlessly incorporated into the shot.
• Using innovative approaches to solve problems and ensure VFX assets are delivered in line with production requirements.

Level 4 Junior VFX Artist Core Competencies

Throughout you time as a JUNIOR VFX ARTIST apprentice, you will need to meet the competencies of your role. The list below provides an overview of the competencies you need to demonstrate in order to meet the criteria and obtain the qualification:

  • Knowledge of 3D camera principles, such as lenses, distortion, and parallax
  • Ability to work out the co-ordinates and movement of the physical camera and/or objects in a live-action shot and track cameras and objects quickly and effectively
  • Able to deliver work within established project targets and timelines and to high-quality standards
  • Show that you can work collaboratively with clients, colleagues, partners, and suppliers in the VFX industry
  • Knowledge of and ability to work within the particular workflow pipeline/toolset of the company
  • Ability to take direction and feedback to create the effects required
  • Ability to manage their own workload, attend review sessions, and work effectively in collaboration with others
  • Understanding of their place within the production workflow process and the importance of organizing their VFX outputs using appropriate storage processes and systems
  • Ability to use innovative approaches to solve problems and ensure VFX assets are delivered in line with production requirements
  • Having an understanding of emerging practices and technology in the visual effects (VFX) industry such as new tools, software, data and other related technology

Junior VFX Artist knowledge modules and vendor exams

During your apprenticeship, you will need to complete the multiple tasks below to achieve a pass or distinction graded apprenticeship:

  • K1: Understanding of client/supervisor requirements for VFX assets.
  • Knowledge of tools and techniques for creating VFX assets.
  • Understanding of creative, narrative, and technical demands of production.
  •  Knowledge of VFX production workflow processes.
  • Understanding of visual style of work.
  • Ability to work autonomously and with clients in the VFX industry.
  • Ability to deliver VFX assets according to production requirements.
  • Knowledge of asset management and storage processes.
  • Ability to manage own VFX assets through workflow pipeline.
  • Ability to collaborate with other departments to meet production requirements.
  • Ability to take direction and feedback to improve VFX assets.
  • Knowledge of emerging practices and technology in the VFX industry.
  • Ability to seek out information on emerging practices and technology.
  • Knowledge of appropriate technology for rendering VFX assets.
  • Ability to select and use appropriate technology for rendering VFX assets.
  • Ability to evaluate VFX assets in line with feedback.
  • Ability to continuously improve own practice.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and practices.
